Here’s my top 5 favourite lipsticks. I wouldn’t say I’m particularly drawn to a certain shade, as you can see I like both reds and nudes and to be honest pretty much everything in-between! Compared to some, I have a fairly modest collection but it was easy to pick out 5 as they are definitely my go to lipsticks. Not gonna lie, I’m a bit of a lipstick fiend really. *monkey covering eyes emoji*
You might notice that 4 of them have a matte finish, did I mention I love a matte lip? 😉 😉
Okay firstly I apologize for the middle one at the back that looks a bit gnarled, or if you were to see the back of it would think that a badger tried to have a chew on it then spat it back out. (I think it kinda melted and then set again…) I mean I looove me some lipstick but not enough to eat actually eat it!
Okay so we’ll start with the aforementioned gnarled lipstick which is Seventeen Mirror Shine Lipstick in Beehive. This is a glossy nude-y peach color, perfect to wear for a natural look or with a dark smokey eye just to tone down the lips a little. This is the kind of thing I go for when I want just a little something but I don’t want to have to worry about up-keep or want to look like I’ve made too much effort. It goes on smoothly and keeps lips hydrated, win-win. I find the packaging a little clunky but it shuts with a magnet, which always adds a touch more luxury than just a lid that clips on.
My favourite red of all time has to be MAC Russian Red, the tones in the lipstick suit red/pink toned skin but to be honest if you pair it with the right eye and face makeup then I think it could look amazing on anybody! It is slightly deeper than MAC Ruby Woo which is another popular red, but this is what I like about it. The depth of colour gives a slight vintage feel to it and I find it more wearable than something with a more orange-y or brighter hue to it. It’s a little bit drying on the lips but that’s expected from a matte finish, I mean you can’t have your cake and eat it!
A fairly new addition to the gang is Illamasqua Lava Lips in Activist, read my blog post on it here. Now this, this bullet of lipstick is unique work of art, a thing of pure beauty (btw I know how sad that sounds!) I never thought I’d be one for purple lipstick but I’m definitely converted, I’ve seen the light and it’s swirly and purple, even if I get some strange looks while walking down the street wearing it! It smells like Palma Violets, which is probably not to everyone’s taste but I like it. It’s just nice to get a slightly different shade every-time, you can rub your lips together to get a consistent colour or apply it and blend slightly with a brush to get a mixed swirly looking finish.
What’s this? Another red? Why yes friend, yes it is but this is definitely darker and what you might call more of an Autumnal-ly shade. It’s quite well known in the ‘drugstore’ makeup world especially since everyone’s favourite beauty blogger/YouTuber Zoella started raving about it. I actually picked up Rimmel Kate Moss Lipstick in 107/Wine on a whim before I heard any reviews and then when everyone was going on about it I felt pretty chuffed with myself. I’d say it’s the kind of shade that could suit any skin tone really, even a pasty gal like me. Again as you’d expect with a matte finish it can be quite drying and can cling to any dry patches so best to exfoliate and moisturize your lips beforehand. If you compare this swatch against Russian Red, you can clearly see that 107 is darker and more ‘berry toned’.
And last but by no means least is MAC Persistence. Now ‘back in’t day’ I would have never worn brown lipstick (I blame Kylie Jenner for the brown-y nude shenanigans). As part of my 18th birthday present I had my make up done at MAC and this is the lipstick that was used on me so that was it, I had to get it! I still wouldn’t go full brown but brown/nude is a safe bet and I don’t know what it is but I put this lipstick on and I automatically feel so much more sophisticated and dare I say it…a tad chic. Or pair it with a bronze eye (I recommend Maybelline Colour Tattoo Cream Eyeshadow in On And On Bronze) and feel like an actress in a film noir. I think I let my mind run away with itself sometimes, haha.
If you’ve made it this far, I applaud and congratulate you on making it through one of my ramblings about stuff I like to decorate my face with.
